Your Working World

Career advice TV show, Your Working World launched 2010 24 Feb broadcast on Summit TV - channel 412 on DSTv

“Given the high unemployment rate in our country, it is clear that we need to take career guidance to the next level.” says Service Seta CEO Ivor Bluementhal.

A career guidance TV show is to bring much needed career information and advice to the screens and homes of South Africans.

In a broad move to broaden the reach of career guidance, the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) has partnered with Summit TV to screen a series of shows that focuses on various career options in the services industry.

Entitled Your working World, the show is to be screened every Wednesday at 5pm on Dstv, starting 24 February 2010.

“What makes Your Working World unique is the comprehensive coverage that is given to each career option” Bluementhal explains.

“We zoom in to highlight the various career options and jobs within each particular industry. The education and training that is required to enter such careers is placed under the spotlight as well as future career prospects.”

As the Service Seta funds the show, only careers that fall within its sector will receive coverage. They are among the others: Marketing – including public relations, brand marketing, direct marketing and marketing research. Mail handling and courier services. Hairdressing – including nail health skin care. Dry cleaning and laundering. Garden maintenance services. Funeral and related services such as manufacturing of tomb stones. Hiring services – including truck, plant and video. Make-up artistry. Valuing and auctioneering. Property management services Domestic and cleaning services recruitment – including temporary and permanent employment services and labour brokering.

The outspoken, at times controversial, but doggedly committed-to-skills-development Bluementhal plays host in the TV show. He inteviews guests who are presently working in the industries under discussion as well as representatives of unions and other relevant industry leaders. The show is in the format of a no-nonsense maximum-information talk show.

Pupils get the opportunity to suggest some of the questions that Bluementhal poses to the guests on the show. Besides providing general career guidance, Your Working World aims at advancing the case for learnerships, vocational and skills training via the show.

“Broadcast like this will go a long way in changing public perceptions about training that falls outside the academic realm. We will be giving industry-based career training its rightful place in the education landscape” he says.

He points out this approach fits in with the ideals of Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande. The minister made it clear at the press conference earlier this year that he would be encouraging young people to enrol at colleges saying “the perception that post-school only means university is something we need to change.”

Nzimande also said he would be strengthening career guidance both at schools and at community centres. Bluementhal says the Service Seta will evaluate the impact of the show and “take it from there”

“At this stage Summit TV is the only platform offering us this broad awareness campaign,” he says. The Seta has also entered into an agreement with The Star Workplace to summarise the show's content into print articles for the convenience of readeres who do not have access to Dstv.
