Students: What do they benefit from tertiary life?
Why Study? when asked this question students give different reasons which most are motivational to them to pursue their post matric studies. The most common reasons in the list are passion and security.
Passion – Most students will choose to further their studies in the field they passionate about which also gives them an everlasting interest to pursue studying despite any stresses that comes along with it.
Security - Most say further study programs enables them to develop skills that better market them to the employer and such credentials provide a distinct advantage particularly when competing against other applicants for a job.
While the above may be true, one should bear in mind that there are other key elements which are developed along with a study program which are fundamentals of success when pursuing other goals in life.
Either than achieving a graduation at the end of your study term you also achieve life skills which you can put to use in any leadership role in your future career or business, like the following:
- Organizing yourself – At tertiary institution you are on your own and have freedom as compared to your old school so you need to learn and plan to use your time sensibly. You will be subjected to a number of simultaneous demands by different lectures on many occasions which could be overwhelming for a student.
Your schedule (which you will be in control of) will be overcrowded by due projects, assignments, tests, experiments, projects, reports and organizing bursary and/or internship/job applications.
So learning to organize and maintaining a balance in your study program, sporting and social activities and most importantly having discipline over your plan are the first compulsory skills you are compelled to learn in a tertiary institution.
- Research skill – Most skills you learn at higher education institution are unrecognizable but significant and compulsory in many areas of your career or business endeavor. Your research skill for instance is developed while searching through the wealth of information, finding and using the source you need for your assignments and projects. These are offcourse basic skills that you develop on your own but will come in handy for your future career and/or business.
- Information and knowledge – Quantifying and memorizing information for the benefit of passing your subjects does not necessarily mean you have knowledge in that field, but having an awareness and understanding of that information may deem you to be knowledgeable in that field.
Gathering information for an assignment may be easy but when you are put into task with your info in a project or even an interview, that is when you have to apply your knowledge and understanding of your information. The skill learnt here which is compulsory even in your personal life is converting information into knowledge.
- Psychological factors – Tertiary studies will force you to work in groups on many occasions where you will engage professionally with your fellow students. This teaches you to conduct and behave yourself professionally amongst your colleagues especially if you have a leadership role to play in your organization or business.
Psychologically, academic credentials give most people a status of being well-mannered with acquaintance or even in social gathering in your private life. Being professional is a skill difficult to build on your own.
Success is not just about intelligence but about how you acquire skills, experience and knowledge and apply them in pursuit of your goals. The tertiary life offers all of the above, how you put them into use is up to you but they are vital tools for success. Such skills also add to your potential of building other streams of income and this can be achieved while you still a student.
