Matric Students
Most matric students finish school and find themselves at home or forever looking for jobs and ready to cry fowl blaming government or everyone else around them but themselves. This is mostly due to a lack of responsibility in nurturing their future while still at school.
According to government stats, the proportion of young people among the jobless – and half of those without jobs are classified as ‘youth’. Amongst these, many came out of matric with good results but due to lack of knowledge or misguidance in further study bursaries or student financial aid schemes, they find themselves spending more time idling at home unnecessarily.
This ends up becoming a financial burden and stress on a parent as they have to fork out their last cash to help out their kids
A reasonable income job requires a post matric education which doesn’t come cheap these days. Many students just need to apply themselves in accessing bursaries and financial aid schemes as early as grade 11 or 12 and this does not require any super powers.
All students (not only matric students) need to do is to find out what criteria do they need
to meet to qualify for the bursary they intend applying for and work towards that criteria. In the beginning of matric year one should have decided his/her field of interest and apply for the relevant bursary before the closing date.
If not successful in getting a bursary, it’s not the end of the world
Not all applicants will be successful. There are financial aid schemes which provide loans for financially challenged students which can be turned to bursaries through hard work. National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is one that provides loans to the most financial needy students to study at a higher education institution.
But this scheme also has a criteria, it provides study loans to academically able but financially needy students. A large part of this loan can be converted into a bursary which need not be repaid depending on an academic progress.
Post matric study costs do not need to be a sole responsibility of a parent, students also need to play a role especially if they meet the criteria for certain bursaries. This is also an official step for one to prepare him/herself for a real world as they’re now going to be on their own.
